Metrology is a term used to define the science of measurement which on itself reflects how well the product that is produced corresponds to the tolerance specification given.
Different industries have different specifications for measurements specification. The tighter the tolerances the more complex the process needs to be to achieve the quality needed to manufacture this product.
This is my journey from Finland to the United Kingdom which was initially intended to be for study purposes before I know it, I was employed by an automotive industry in Glasgow city in Scotland.
My bachelor thesis was about "Using loops for operating the CMM" (link attached below)
A CMM stands for Coordinate Measurement Machine which is used to dimensional metrology inspection.
The automotive company in Glasgow saw my skills and contacted me to work with them. They make automotive parts from Land Rover and BMW. During my time there was coding the CMM to do the measurement inspections automatically when I noticed that there are many faulty parts that did not meet the specification. I reported this right away to the managers at that company they had to halt the production of parts until the process is optimized.
The core problem was that they wanted to increase productivity but that costs them in a reduction in quality. Had these issued not been addressed on time, this can cost the company millions of pounds in loss because these faulty parts will not be able to fit correctly into the assembly.
After my contract ended, I decided to move on to an even more complex industry which is the medical devices and pharmaceutical companies. I have had the chance to work with a couple of rival companies (Becton Dickinson US-based and Own Mumford UK-based).
At that time, I have come to realize that they are dealing with such low tolerances that are sometimes very difficult to achieve because the material used is by itself on the limit of breaking if tighter tolerances and specifications are to be applied to it.
The devices used were CT scanners similar to the once used to diagnose pregnancy but at an industrial level. and some CMMs that I had worked with previously.
We are looking at several Microns of accuracy and production reproducibility
I realized at that time that there is a faulty in the cone angle of a syringe that is used to give as an injection to patients. in other words, the cylinder cone angle inside the syringe is 1 degree more than it should be. This means that patients will be getting an overdose without knowing the core issue.
At that moment I rushed to report the problem to the managers and they had to halt production for more than 50,000 syringes because that means risking patients' life.
Again the same issue was that productivity was the priority but at the cost of quality.
After process optimization, the company came to realize the responsibility that can arise from faulty parts to patients' life. and I was well awarded for that.
Then I came to realize that I wanted to explore the world more and ease the work for me as sitting in an office until retirement is something that is not for me. So I decided to make my own company which is active until this moment in time and located in Oxford, United Kingdom.
My company name is "Service Metrology Limited" and now I am providing metrology programming and fixture designs with Solidworks for metrology and quality inspection.
Finally, I am now in pursuit of a new type of job and it is the Freelancing, I am quite new to this and my first sign up is with Toptal company.
